A journey

It was a dream of mist

that kept us walking through the dawn

and into the next day

where my courage failed.

Carry on, my lover said,

the land where we go

is green and peaceable, peaceable and green.

I thought of the room

in which we had stayed,

the walls so thin

the heat passed through them

into the night

thought of the three of us,

three tiny flecks on the turning world,

and walked.

Forty or fifty years,

what of it?
